Elementary Library Goal: To encourage a love of reading and learning in all students.
Open Monday - Friday
8:00am - 3:00pm
The Elementary program at Gretna Public Schools' is to encourage a love a reading and learning in all students. We work towards this goal in weekly library classes through literacy lessons that introduce students to books & authors and skills lessons that teach students to use both print and online resources. These skills will be practiced through a variety of activities and research projects facilitated by both the librarian and the classroom teachers.
At Thomas Elementary, we have an open checkout policy. Students are welcome to come in anytime during the week to return or to check out books. They are not restricted to checking out at their class' weekly scheduled library time. The quantity and type of books available to students at any given time is as follows.
Kindergarten: one or two books starting around the first week of September once we cover what borrowing and book care means
First Grade: one or two books
Second Grade: one or two books
Third Grade: one or two books
Fourth Grade: one or two books
Fifth Grade: one or two books
All check outs are for a duration of two weeks, although most students will checkout at least once weekly. We also allow for a total of four books to be checked out at once in case they are still finishing the story or if they forgot their books at home.
No fines will be issued for late returns, however if a book is damaged or lost, a replacement fee will be assessed.
